Exciting changes are on the horizon at Robertson Library!
Phase 1 of the renovation is nearing completion, but there have been a few additional construction delays. The Robertson Library is now scheduled to fully reopen for students and visitors in early October.
We will continue to operate a temporary service point in Library Annex classroom 235, from 9:00 am–5:00 pm, Monday–Friday, until the Library reopens.
See our Temporary Service Point Page for more information about what is available in Room 235 during the closure.
Evening and weekend printing/scanning support will remain unavailable until the Library’s main Service Desk reopens in early October, so please plan accordingly; if you have time-sensitive printing/scanning needs outside of the 235 service point hours, the downtown Charlottetown Library Learning Centre or the Staples Printing Centre may be able to assist.
In addition, McMillan Hall in the UPEI Student Centre, when not being used for a scheduled event, is available as a student study space.
Phase 2, the construction of the new University Archives and Special Collections (UASC) Preservation Centre and the revitalization of study spaces on the Library's main floor, is expected to begin in September 2026, marking a major investment in preserving the University's unique archival collections and the future of student learning spaces. It will not only create a state-of-the-art preservation centre and dedicated UASC Reading Room but will also deliver a completely renewed and modernised Learning Commons.
Designed with students in mind, the revitalised Learning Commons will offer modern, flexible spaces for studying, collaborating, researching, and connecting with others. The redevelopment will create a more welcoming and vibrant hub at the heart of the Library, supporting everything from quiet study to group work and informal learning.
To minimize disruption, work on the renewed Learning Commons is anticipated to take place in Summer 2027 alongside the completion of the UASC Preservation Centre, with the space reopening planned for Fall 2027 and the new UASC Reading Room to follow in Spring 2028. We are excited to create a more modern, dynamic, and welcoming library experience while ensuring the University's archival treasures are preserved for generations to come.
Stay tuned for project updates as construction gets underway!
Extended Study Hours. You asked. We listened. We delivered!
Based on student feedback, the Robertson Library is extending study hours to give students more time and flexibility to learn, collaborate, and prepare for exams.
Starting with the reopening in early October, students will have expanded access to library study spaces, with even longer hours during the exam period (until midnight during the term and until 3:00 am during finals). We are excited to support students' success by providing more opportunities to study when it works best for you.
To make it possible, we are also realigning staffed service hours to better match periods of highest demand. By focusing staff support where it is needed most, we can provide greater flexibility for students while continuing to deliver high-quality library services.
What does this mean for students?
- More access to study spaces and longer study hours
- Continued safe building access outside staffed hours with security coverage
- Group study rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis after 6:00 pm. · Library in-person services concentrated during peak demand time (see Service Hours & Study Hours)
- New self-checkout station to make borrowing materials convenient during study hours
- Secure charging stations for phones, laptops, and other devices available outside of service hours
More study time. More flexibility. The same commitment to supporting your success!
